LLANSANTFFRAID Village Football Club have warned vandals targeting their Treflan ground of future police action

LLANSANTFFRAID Village Football Club have warned vandals targeting their Treflan ground of future police action.

The club were sickened to discover their ground littered with soiled nappies and over 100 empty cans in midweek and have now warned a repeat will see them report the ongoing problem to the police.

Chairman Doug Williams has also reported a fifth of the club’s 500 bucket seats have been damaged during a prolonged campaign of petty vandalism, which has spanned years.

“We are all out of ideas,” said Williams. “We have tried reasoning with local youths, we have tried giving them a few free soft drinks. Now we are at the end of our tether and our only option is to involve the police.”

Treflan has been the home of football in Llansantffraid for more than half a century, with its previous occupants TNS relocating to Oswestry in 2007 and leaving a phoenix club to form.

The facilities are among the best in Central Wales and a great source of pride for the ambitious Spar Mid Wales League One club, who currently sit in second place after a fine start to the season.

“The ground is being treated like an unofficial youth club and residents living near Treflan are getting fed up with the noise and the mess being left as much as the club,” said Williams. “It has to stop.

“A lot of hard work by many people has been put into developing our facilities over the years and it is totally unacceptable that of our 500 seats over 100 of them are now all but ruined.”

CCTV has been installed at the ground with the aim of identifying the offenders and Williams insisted the club would no longer tolerate such incidents and hoped local families would help ensure an end to the vandalism.

“I would hope that parents would remind their children that such behaviour does harm to the club and would not want their child to be part of it.”

The case is far from uncommon in Mid Wales with Welshpool Town and Machynlleth regular victims of vandals over recent years, while Llanfyllin Town and Guilsfield have also had their football facilities targeted.
